Dealing with a Horse Who Passed Away

This post is dedicated to a horse, named Luke, who was 33 years old, that unfortunately passed away due to old age April 6th, 2024, on his own.

Dealing with a horse who passed can be very difficult, especially if you have a connection with them, no matter if you worked with them.

I believe we can all agree horses are amazing creatures, but unfortunately, they are fragile creatures.

Celebrating Luke’s 30th Birthday

Community is very important when losing a horse. There are many ways to grieve together. One of the things that could help is having a little party and get together. Everyone can share special memories about the horse and laugh at the silliness.

At my old backyard barn we went to a specific restaurant every time we had to put a horse down. Sadly, when you’re at a barn for long enough you may witness or be around horses when they pass.

Stay around the barn and be around your friends. That’s what I did, hung out and just talked to everybody. We didn’t really talk about anything, we just got caught up.

The barn you ride at may have their own traditions and way to deal with a horse passing.

Each barn owner/trainer has their own way of dealing with grief and loss when dealing with a horse who passed away, so you want to make sure you are respectful of those traditions.
